On November 26, 2019, the Walton County Board of County Commissioners considered an application by Range Project, LLC for a major development order to construct an outdoor shooting range on approximately 48.33 acres in central Walton County, approximately three miles south of Interstate 10 to the east of US Hwy. 331. The project is a veteran-owned and operated facility which will provide membership opportunities for those wishing to learn gun-safety and self-defense techniques from military special forces experts, as well as providing concealed-carry classes and small-arms target practice.
During the over six-hour hearing, the Range Project, through their attorney Stephen Tatum of Matthews & Jones, LLP, presented shooting range design and safety experts as well as compatibility expert testimony and documentation to the Board. Several members of the surrounding, rural area appeared before the commission, along with their retained attorney, to contest the project’s approval. Ultimately, the Board of County Commissioners voted 3 to 1 to approve the project with conditions provided by the Range Project related to perimeter walls and sound mitigation.
The Range Project hopes to complete construction and begin taking membership applications as soon as summer of 2020.
